Assaf Yechiel from Cape Town's Orphanage Bar, has taken the top spot in last week's Bacardi Legacy Competition.
The Bacardi Legacy Competition sets out to challenge the best contemporary bartenders on the globe to create their own cocktail legacy. The event took place at Katy's Palace in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Thursday 13th March 2014, where seven finalists from all over South Africa battled for the top spot.
This prestigious competition was judged by international Bacardi judges Shingo Gokan, David Cordoba and Richard Neil Irwin, plus the 2013 Bacardi Legacy winner Nick Koumbarakis.
Assaf's winning cocktail, Dream Catcher, comprises of Bacardi Superior Rum, Pomegranate Juice, Dill Syrup and Fermet Branca. When asked what the thought was behind this concoction, Assaf stated that "it is about inspiring people to follow through with their - I would love to do that - moments. To live a little more, worry a little less and embrace life's bizarre and wonderful gifts. Quite simply, it's about being a Dream Catcher."
Orphanage House Master, Raymond Endean, had to say this about Assaf's win:"Assaf has been one of the most amazing servants to the cause. His dedicaton to this competition and the mixology craft really leaves most men in the dust. Orphanage is so proud of his win and to call him one of our own!"
Bacardi Portfolio Ambassador South Africa, Kevin Snyman, has this to say:"It is with great pleasure that we announce Assaf Yechiel as this years winner of the Bacardi Legacy Finals South Africa. Assaf fended off the best in the business in an incredibly emotional final. We are proud that he will be representing South Africa at the Global Finals, taking place in Moscow in May! I want to extend a special thanks to all those that competed, you are all legends."
