Avondale has released the latest Mèthode Cap Classique in its portfolio - the vintage Armilla Blanc de Blanc 2009. Although the Paarl producer has made MCC wine since 2003, all have been non-vintage - until now. The wine's flavours recall hazelnut bread, fresh quince and gardenias that linger in a multi-layered finish.
"We're tremendously excited about this new creation," says Avondale proprietor Johnathan Grieve, adding that the MCC comes in a new bottle shape too. "All the threads that represent Avondale at its most excellent are evident here: the influence of the stars; a handcrafted style; limited volume; and, the use of naturally organic processes. The extended lees contact in particular makes the Armilla Blanc de Blanc 2009 exceptionally well integrated in flavour and structure. The wine has depth of character and richness without being heavy. It's fresh, lively and multi-faceted," Grieve says.
Grieve pioneered the organic-biodynamic-scientific farming approach he calls BioLOGIC®. It works as a system in which soil and water, plants, animals and people, and energy are part of a web of relationships and networks, interconnected and interdependent. Guided by the Avondale ethos of "Terra Est Vita", or "Soil is life", Grieve bases his system on the simple but profound principle that healthy soil produces healthy plants.
Avondale is organically certified by Control Union Certifications according to USDA NOP and EU Organic standards. No pesticides or herbicides whatsoever are used on the farm.
The wine itself is made from Chardonnay grapes, organically grown on vines ranging in age between eight and 20 years. It's a low sulphur wine and has only its natural acidity. It was aged on the lees for five years.
"We always retain a small proportion of each MCC to add into the next new wine, so we've managed to retain the essence of our first MCC, of 2003," says Grieve.
Avondale is a 300 year old, family-run farm that is situated on Lustigan Road, Klein Drakenstein, Paarl – on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains.
