Bartending Comp - Monkeying Around at The Union (JHB)

If you live in Jo'burg and rate yourself as a bartender, why not put your skills to the test in the Monkeying Around Competition?

This June MolecularBars will be hosting a bartending competition at The Union Pop Up Bar sponsored by Monkey Shoulder 'triple' malt whisky. It will be split into two sections - Flair and Mixo - and there is no entrance fee. Winners walk away with Monkey Shoulder hampers and some serious bragging rights!

Monkeying Around (Mixo)

Date: 9th of June 2014
Event Venue: The Union Pop Up Bar
Address: Corner Chaplin and Oxford Road Illovo (Norman Goodfellows Dispatch)
Starting time: 7pm sharp

 

General:

  • The competition is open to all persons over the age of 18
  • Smart casual attire

 

Competition Format:

  • The competitor will have 5min to set up for the competition.
  • The competitor will have to make 2 different cocktails.
  • All cocktails can contain any ingredients, but at least one must contain Monkey Shoulder.
  • No bar equipment will be allowed other than your gold plated shakers. Everything else needs to be found at home. So no fancy 55cm bar spoons or titanium jigger. The use of any bar equipment other than the required shaker is not permitted and points will be deducted for failure to adhere to this rule. Points will be awarded for creativity and originality of the bar tools that you are going to use.
  • You will need to use two different techniques for your two cocktails so get creative and try some new things.
  • The competitor will then have 5min for their routine.
  • The time-keeper is in control of the time and will notify the competitor at his request.
  • Competitors will be disqualified after 6min.
  • Competitors will be penalised for every second over 5min.
  • After the competitors have completed their routines they will have 5min to clear their stations.
  • All equipment, bottles e.g. must be brought and stored in a form of crate and kept neatly in the holding area.

 

Neatness and Etiquette:

  • Hygiene aspects will be taken into consideration – hair, open shoes, clean-shaven, hands in ice etc.
  • This is a FORMAL COMPETITION and competitors are to dress appropriately. Those who don't will be heavily penalised.
  • The name of the cocktail must be relevant to the cocktail being presented to obtain maximum points.
  • No obscene names permitted.

 

Method:

  • Any method may be used to prepare the cocktail, as long as the two cocktails are made with different methods.
  • The competitor must supply all the equipment that is needed for their routine. Just a reminder, you will have points deducted if the use of any other bar equipment is used other than a shaker.

 

Cocktail Recipes:

  • Any method may be used to prepare the cocktail i.e. muddle, shake and strain etc....
  • One of the cocktails (or both) must contain at least 50ml Monkey Shoulder.
  • Any ingredients can be used except a competitive brand to Monkey Shoulder.
  • Both cocktails may not exceed 8 ingredients excluding ice and garnish.
  • Monkey Shoulder will be supplied to you on the day of the competition.

 

Garnish:

  • Go Crazy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Judging: The judging panel will consist of the following people with their respective duties:

  • 1 x Referee and Time Keeper
  • 1 x Technical Judge – will judge the following technical aspects (20% max):
    - Presentation of bottles
    - Handling of ice, equipment & glassware
    - Empting excess water
    - Spillage
    - Neatness & garnish
    - Accuracy of pouring & recipe
    - Overall neatness & efficiency
  • 2 x Cocktail Judges will judges the following (80% max):
    - Appearance
    - Aroma
    - Taste
    - Overall Impression

In the event of a tie a count will be based on technical scores. Should you have any queries questions be sure to bring them to the attention of the referee prior to going on stage.

Monkeying Around (Flair)

General:

  • The competition is open to all persons over the age of 18
  • Smart casual attire

 

Competition Format:

  • The competitor will have 5min to set up for the competition.
  • The competitor will have to make 2 different cocktails.
  • We encourage you to bring your own music so that you feel comfortable. The format must be CD.
  • All cocktails can contain any ingredients, but at least one must contain Monkey Shoulder.
  • You will need to use a minimun of 4 bartending tools per cocktail, i.e jiggas, bar spoons, strainers etc. The misuse or not using the required minimun 4 tools will end up in points being deducted from your score.
  • A banana stall is required per routine.
  • The competitor will then have 5min for their routine.
  • The time-keeper is in control of the time and will notify the competitor at his request.
  • Competitors will be disqualified after 6min.
  • Competitors will be penalised for every second over 5min.
  • After the competitors have completed their routines they will have 5min to clear their stations.
  • All equipment, bottles e.g. must be brought and stored in a form of crate and kept neatly in the holding area.
  • Competitors are required to bring empty bottles of the alcohol they will be using in their recipe. These are to be used in the case of breakages. Monkey Shoulder may not be decanted into any other bottle as it is the sponsored product.
  • No flairing with empty bottles allowed. Min liquid in a flair bottle is 12.5 ml.

  • Hygiene aspects will be taken into consideration – hair, open shoes, clean-shaven, hands in ice etc.
  • This is a FORMAL COMPETITION and competitors are to dress appropriately. Competitors who do not dress appropriately will be heavily penalised.
  • The name of the cocktail must be relevant to the cocktail being presented to obtain maximum points.
  • No obscene names permitted.

 

Method:

  • Any method may be used to prepare the cocktail.
  • Competitors are required to use a tot measure; no free pouring is permitted. Just remember, you need to use bar equipment.
  • The competitor must supply all the equipment that is needed for their routine.
  • All flair styles are allowed

 

Cocktail Recipes:

  • Any method may be used to prepare the cocktail, i.e. muddle, shake and strain etc....
  • One (or both) of the cocktails must contain at least 50ml of Monkey Shoulder.
  • Any amount of any ingredients can be used except a competitive brand to Monkey Shoulder.

 

Scoring: You will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Work flair
  • A full bottle flair
  • Spillages and breakages will be deductions
  • Use of bar equipment
  • Banana stall will be bonus points

 

Garnish:

  • Go Crazy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
