Thousands of music fans braved the extra cold front to see some of Hip Hop's greatest local and international artists perform on one stage at Castle Lite's Extra Cold Music Concert earlier this month.
The concert, produced by Hip Hop legend Timbaland, featured a star-studded line-up that included explosive performances by Timbaland himself, Wiz Khalifa, Nas, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mi Casa, Zakes Bantwini, Spoek Mathambo, DJ Clock with Beatenberg, Reason as well as the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mi Casa performed a song with Ladysmith Black Mambazo that is bound to become a hit, and then the Multi Grammy Award-winning LBM performed their hit song "Homeless" that has become an anthem in SA. Yet these born-free Hip Hop fans sang along to every word making the performance magical. Wiz Khalifa then walked on stage, performing some of his old tracks like "Black and Yellow" and of course his latest hit "We Dem Boyz". Shortly after his performance, Wiz tweeted: "Vibes felt. Goal achieved. South Africa." The man of the hour, Timbaland, then came on and performed some of his greatest hits that had almost everyone on their feet. It was like experiencing a BillBoard Top 100 chart list, right in front of you. Just moments before going on stage, Nas tweeted "Gettin ready to hit the stage. Feeling like it's about to be my best show yet." And he might have been right. In yet another explosive performance, Nas re-engineered his Illmatic debut album that he first released 20 years ago. He made his hits from 1994 come alive with an incredible 6 piece Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra from USA and our very own 26 piece Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In this innovative experience, fans felt his energy.
Castle Lite's General Manager Andrea Quaye commented: "Nas is one of the few artists who stays current – 20 years on. And it's for this reason and the fact that he very innovatively collaborated not only with his own Illmatic orchestra but also our very own Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra that allowed him to make history last night. We here in SA have been honoured to see him with uber talented local musicians."
Actress Pearl Thusi, DJ Warras and radio legend Gareth Cliff kept the crowds busy while set changes took place.
Quaye admits this Extra Cold Music experience has been the highlight of the brand's journey in creating platforms for music lovers. "The Extra Cold Music concert as produced by Timbaland has really taken music experiences we know, to the next level. This has been an amazing concert and something many of us will remember for years to come."
