Johnnie Walker's King of Flavour event at Shine Studios

Last month Johnnie Walker hosted the King of Flavour Experience at Shine Studios in Braamfontein where over 300 people were treated to a night of bold flavours as they had the opportunity to rub shoulders with celebrity guests DJ Fresh, Jeannie D and Mokena Makeka. MUDL was treated to a preview of the flavour matching experience a while earlier, which you can read about here.

On arrival, guests were greeted with a Johnnie & Ginger (1 part whisky 3 parts Ginger Ale) welcome cocktail before they made their way through a series of rooms to experience the Johnnie Walker flavours and record their preferences onto their profiler score cards.

Thandeka Ngqumeya, Marketing Manager at Johnnie Walker said, "The aim of the King of Flavour event was to bring the online flavour profiler, www.meetyourmatchsa.co.za to life for Johnnie Walker fans by taking them on a physical journey as well as introducing them to all the big, bold flavours of Johnnie Walker. For fans who could not attend, guests shared their experience on social media using the #meetyourmatchsa hashtag."

Thandeka added, "We partnered with Executive Chef David Higgs, who developed 14 unique expressions of these flavours disguised in different foods for guests to taste. We also made sure that the food as well as each of the rooms were as distinct as possible to reflect the diverse tastes of the Johnnie Walker drinker."

Commenting on the thought-process behind each of the different foods, David who was named SA's Top Chef of 2013 said, "The whole idea was for guests to taste the flavours without knowing what they were. That way there are no preconceived ideas of what they do and do not like and instead we get an instant, honest reaction. Your flavour palate changes depending on the day, time and even mood so we wanted to get as objective feedback as possible and I think we achieved it."

At the final stop, each guest placed their score cards onto a screen which revealed their perfect Johnnie Walker match – Red Label, Black Label, Gold Label Reserve or Platinum Label - and the associated celebrity. Guests where then invited to enjoy the rest of the night in a whisky lounge while sipping on Johnnie Walker and listening to the live sounds of DJ Black Coffee and Richard Marshall.
