The revamped Scottish Leader whisky brand is starting to see the benefits of its reformulated Scottish Leader Original recipe. The blended whisky that sells in more than 60 countries has just been declared a master in its category at the recent Global Scotch Whisky Masters competition in the UK.
"We're always thrilled when our whiskies win awards, but this one is an extra special achievement, given the recent reformulation and enhancement of the taste profile of Scottish Leader Original, and the fact that it was the only whisky in the 'blended: standard category' to earn master status," said Emma Henderson, the global marketing manager for Scottish Leader.
The Scotch Whisky Masters, launched in 2008 by leading industry publication The Spirits Business, is the whisky arm of The Spirits Masters. All entries are tasted blind.
The judges praised Scottish Leader Original's new taste profile, with an increased single malt content to create a "richer blend with a warm, honey sweet, delicately smoky taste and silky smooth finish."
Judge Robert Chapman said: "There were a wide range of high quality whiskies, none of which you would expect for the price. The master (referring to Scottish Leader Original) could have fooled me into thinking it was from a different category."
Scottish Leader was relaunched in November 2014, with two of the expressions in the revitalised range, Scottish Leader Original and Scottish Leader Signature, first unveiled in South Africa before going world-wide. The Scottish Leader Signature is a new premium addition to the range, and has a more pronounced West Coast island malt influence than Scottish Leader Original. Additional aged malts give a "smooth, complex and layered whisky offering with a very rich, smoky profile."
