World Class SA - CT Leg - Whisky Category

Yesterday saw 19 bartenders from some of the Western Cape's best cocktail venues convene at Cape Town's luxurious Pepper Club to compete for the Single Malt and Blended Scotch Whisky leg of World Class South Africa (Western Cape).

The action took place throughout the day, 20 storeys above the city bowl in the penthouse suite, presided over by three esteemed judges:

  • Travis Kuhn (owner of Pure Bar Studios and current national flair champ)
  • Nick Koumbarakis (2013 national World Class winner)
  • Gareth Wainwright (Brandhouse Reserve Brands Ambassador, Gauteng)

There were many familiar faces, as well as a few newcomers, and in the end it was a first-time contestant who took the R5,000 first prize and put himself in line for a shot at the national 2014 title... congratulations to Oliver Cole from Caprice! His Lagavulin-based cocktail was called The Father Figure, pictured below (thank you Warren Rasmussen from Loop Films for this pic):

In second and third place were Devin Cross and George Novakis respectively, both from The Bascule Bar at the Cape Grace Hotel. Well done to all the contestants.
